The rotating armature produces electric current. Thus, kinetic energy of the wind is converted into electrical energy by windmill. The electricity produced by a single windmill is very small. Therefore, a large number of windmills are erected over a large area, which is known as wind energy farm. Wind energy farms can be established only at those places where wind blows for a greater part of the year. Moreover, the wind should be strong and steady. The minimum wind velocity should be 15km/hr. Wind energy can therefore be utilized only in certain areas. Wind although circulatory and inconsistent contains terrific amounts of energy. The function of wind turbines is to convert wind energy to electric power. The utilization of wind energy systems grew discernibly during the 1980's. Windmills are also used for pumping water, in the coastal and hilly areas where the velocity of wind is very high and can be used for providing electricity to small towns. There are many benefits of using wind energy as it is a renewable source of energy, it causes no pollution and it is not very expensive. Wind turbines can generate energy in the vicinity of 100KW to 5MW. For homes and small business establishments' small turbines can be used to generate power. Large commercialization's can group themselves with wind energy farms which produce energy for the bigger regions. 15,000 plus wind turbines are now operating in California and Hawaii in selected areas. Their combined power rating of 1500 megawatts is roughly equal to that of a conventional steam-turbine power installation. Wind has the power to move even mighty structures. It has the ability to move a car and even uproot a tree. So rather than allowing it to get destructive, it must be harnessed for something constructive. Wind energy saves up to 80-90 % of the total amount spent on electricity. It will take about 10-15 years to recover the total investment. Treat it like any home improvement project and it will increase the value of your property.
